To encourage its user base to interact with the site more, we conceptualized a point system to reward users for using SideReel to track their TV watching. The challenge was create a set of adorable, visually engaging badges that tied into the website’s TV theme and encourage users to interact with our feature set.
Inspired by charming, malleable mascots such as GitHub’s Octocat and Reddit’s Snoo, I designed over 120 highly stylized badges featuring cats, dogs, and other animals, using a brightly colored palette inspired by the site’s color style guide and use of micro textures.
As the scope of the site grew, so did the badge system. With each new feature released, such as user reviews, ratings, and lists, I created a new line of badges to encourage users to explore the feature.
Eventually the badge cats spread beyond the badge system, infiltrating our error pages, social media images, house ads, category graphics, and company swag as the cats came to represent the visual personality of the site.
